Clinical Compassion

Together we form a crappy club

But our members are pretty great

While it comes so easy for others

1 in 6 of us have to wait

For most couples it’s fun and exciting

Peeing on a stick doesn’t bring fear

For a special group of people

We feel the end is never near

We choose to become parents

The biggest commitment of all

No ifs, buts or whoopsies

A mum we want to be called

While others get a sonogram photo

Or wait for their newborn pic

We’re measuring follicle sizes

Hoping our lining comes back thick

So I wanted to shed some light

On a journey that often feels dark

To provoke some feelings and emotion

Reinvigorate a spark

Your desk is filled with files

And I know it’s a numbers game

As we recite our birthdate daily

Sometimes we forget our own name

Education is power

It makes us feel so much stronger

Forgive us for asking questions

But hang on the phone a little longer

We want to understand the science

Even though we have no degree

Our biggest hurdle is in your hands

To make our family

Yes we spend hours on Google

Asking for tests we may not need

For us, this is our whole world

Your commitment is what we want guaranteed

Treatment is a process

But emotion we all hold

To feel like a person not a number

Is worth its weight in gold

While our bodies might be broken

Medically we have hurdles to overcome

Remind us of something others lack

Strength, resilience and commitment are just some

So before the anaesthetist knocks me out

Or a transvaginal probe starts my day

Offer me some reassurance

You’re with me each step of the way

I’ve had nurses hold my hand

When I said, no it’s ok

But their grasp offered me support

That lasted beyond transfer day

And while our case might not be different

Then the couple you saw before

It’s knowing we’re in the safest hands

When we walk out of the door

Everyone’s fears are different

It might be injections like me

For other it’s dropping our dacks often

Something we all do for free

But here’s to the stirrups, swaps and smears

The probes, glue and glove

Thank you for helping creating life

With magic and a lot of love
